To take a stand for climate justice education, sign up for your slot in the reading marathon here!
Join VU scientists, students and staff in a week-long action that demands climate justice education for all! From April 14-17, the entrance hall of the VU main building turns into a stage for a marathon of a different kind: readers will take half-hour turns reading academic texts that show how the climate crisis affects every discipline and career path. Your participation helps demonstrate why climate justice education matters for all.
Climate justice education = Future-proof education
The VU is a sustainability leader in many ways, but there is a gaping hole when it comes to our core task – education. Already today, climate breakdown affects the lives of our students in many ways, and will do so even more in the future. However, most of our study programs still neglect to tell students about the reality of climate breakdown. This is simply irresponsible. We need to teach our students how to live and work in the climate crisis, and how to act for a just future. Therefore we demand that the board of every faculty firmly commits to integrating climate justice education in all curricula.
Take a stand for climate science
Taking a stand for climate justice education is all the more important because climate science is increasingly under threat. The extremist government of Donald Trump is attacking the veracity of climate science, destroying public research institutions, deleting vital data sets and cutting billions of research funding. In Europe, climate deniers are also gaining ground.
Climate collapse and hopeful education
On Tuesday, April 15 (13:00–14:00), join us for “Pedagogies of Collapse,” a lecture by Dr. Ginie Servant-Miklos. Drawing from her new book, Dr. Servant-Miklos will discuss how to teach and learn about climate collapse without resorting to denial or despair, exploring hopeful ways to handle tough truths.
